Majors: The major forms the basis for granting of a baccalaureate or graduate degree. It is a coherent, in-depth program of study in a particular discipline or disciplines wherein the student will develop and demonstrate an increasing awareness of both the possibilities and the limits of the major program of study. Majors are designed to provide a mastery of the content, insights, skills and techniques appropriate to an undergraduate education in a particular body of knowledge. Majors will consist of courses that are often sequential, leading to advanced study in the discipline(s). A major will consist of a minimum of 45 credits. For undergraduate degrees, a 45 to 59 credit major requires completion of a minor and/or second major, in which case the total credits of the major and minor/2nd major must total at least 60 credits.
Specializations: A specialization is a coherent, focused subfield within a degree program. A specialization can be distinguished from a new degree in that the full designation of the degree title - including level, type and major - does not change when a new specialization is added. Specializations in an undergraduate major must share a core, defined as a group of courses shared by all specializations within a major, which consists of no fewer than 25 credits for an undergraduate program or 15 credits for a graduate program. The courses constituting the specialization must consist of no fewer than 20 credits for an undergraduate program or 15 credits for graduate program.
Minors: A minor is a coherent program of study in a particular discipline that provides an area that complements or supplements the student’s major. A minor will consist of a minimum of 20 credits and a maximum of 44 credits.
Certificates: Certificate programs are programs of study that normally require less than 25% of the credits required for a degree program at the same level. Certificate programs may not exceed 44 credits. Certificate programs are specialized career programs, often geared for admission to licensing or career entrance tests, and results in a certificate. Certificate programs may also be noncredit.
Graduate Certificates: Graduate certificate programs are courses of study that require equal to half or less than half of the credits required during a degree program at a similar level. They are usually limited in scope relative to a graduate degree program but provide an opportunity for advanced study with a particular focus. Subject to the regulations that govern a specific program, a graduate certificate can often serve as an intermediate accomplishment for a student whose ultimate goal is a graduate degree.
Minor/ Certificate: This option should be selected when the proposed program may be used as either a minor, certificate program, or both..

A shared core is an identical series of courses that are used by multiple programs, while a program is a set of courses or requirements unique to a single program. If you are unsure whether your proposal is a program or a shared core contact curriculog@cwu.edu for assistance.
The fields that follow should be left blank until it reaches the "Peoplesoft Integration" approval step. These codes are used to identify the program (and specialization when applicable) in MyCWU and will be used in the future to differentiate programs that may have very similar titles.
Type A - College Sponsored Certificate Programs: Programs that admit only matriculating students and offer a set of courses approved through the CWU academic governance procedures are classified as “College Sponsored Certificate Programs.” These programs are developed, taught, and offered by academic departments housed in colleges at CWU.
Type B - Collaborative Certificate Programs: Programs that admit both matriculating students and non-matriculating students and offer a set of courses that includes regular course offerings appearing in the CWU catalog and administered by CWU Colleges are classified as "Collaborative Certificate Programs." These programs are developed, taught, and offered by academic departments housed in colleges in cooperation with the office of continuing education.
Type C - Continuing Education Certificate Programs: Programs that target primarily non-matriculating students and offer a set of instructional experiences developed independent of CWU's colleges but with input as appropriate from faculty are classified as "continuing education certificate programs." These programs are developed, delivered, and administered by the office of continuing education in consultation with faculty, academic departments, and/or college dean, as appropriate.
Type D - Graduate School Certificate Program. Programs that only admit students who meet the criteria to be accepted into the School of Graduate Studies and Research and offer a set of courses which appear in the CWU catalog. Certificates are administered by CWU Colleges and are classified as “Graduate School Certificate Programs”. These programs are developed, taught, and offered by academic departments housed in colleges at CWU.
The Program Narrative is a required description of the program, the others are optional text fields where additional descriptions can be added. If any of the requirements below involve courses or shared cores they must be added into the proposed curriculum. For assistance in attaching an existing core or in creating a new one contct curriculog@cwu.edu. A proposal may be rejected or delayed if the program has, or should have, information in the optional text fields in this section that is not included.
Personal Financial Planning (PFP) prepares graduates to become fee-for service professional planners with strong ethical standards who work with families and individuals developing specific budget, asset management, and related planning processes. The program design and content also meets educational requirements to sit for the Certified Financial Planning Board of Standards, Inc. accreditation examination.
Admission Requirements Admission requirements to major programs within the College of Business are identical regardless of the location of the program. Students must first be accepted by the university and, if applicable, the university center which they plan to attend. Then, students must formally apply to the College of Business and be admitted to a College of Business Program prior to enrolling in 300- and 400-level courses within the college.
Students must attend a College of Business major orientation to be fully admitted to our majors. Applications are only accepted at new student orientations. The application form must be completed and returned to the appropriate office along with copies of current transcripts. If a student has met the requirements of admission but has struggled to do so, the College of Business reserves the right to offer conditional admission status for up to 2 quarters and/or 30 credits in order for the student to demonstrate she/he will be successful. Final admission to the College of Business under these circumstances is not guaranteed.
Students must have the below requirements to be admitted to a College of Business major. Students seeking entry to the College without these requirements will be granted pre-major standing.

Students who have met all of the above requirements will be admitted unless the number of applicants exceeds available space. In that case, acceptance will be competitive, based on a selection index.
Previous or Transfer Coursework Policy Business courses taken to fulfill the requirements for an undergraduate or graduate degree from the CWU College of Business must have been taken within the last 10 years at the time of graduation. Exceptions may be made, but must be approved prior to acceptance into the College of Business by the department chair and dean or designee.
Students wishing to have credits from non-United States institutions considered for transfer into the College of Business for any major or minor must have their transcripts evaluated through outside credential evaluators who are members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), such as the Foundation for International Services (FIS), the World Education Service (WES), or Educational Perspectives. Students who intend to pursue the CPA may instead decide to use the NABSA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy) international evaluation services since it is a requirement of the CPA. Credits for current students participating in a CWU study abroad program will be evaluated by the Office of the Registrar. Equivalent lower-division (100-200 level) courses may be transferred toward meeting the foundation course requirements for any BS degree in the college. Upper-division (300-400 level) courses may be transferred toward meeting the major requirements only with the approval of the department chair and the college dean (or designee).

Academic Jeopardy Policy The College of Business is committed to the success of its students. If a student that has been admitted to the College of Business is deemed to be in academic jeopardy, the College of Business may place restrictions on the student. A student is considered in academic jeopardy for the following reasons:

If a student is unable to improve academically while receiving intensive advising and support or does not actively participate in required advising, the student may be subjected to the College of Business Separation Policy.
Separation Policy If a student that has been admitted to the College of Business is placed on academic probation, suspension, received multiple academic warnings, has repeat academic course withdrawals, or whose academic performance is below the necessary grade point averages required to graduate, then the student’s admission into the College of Business may be rescinded. Once rescinded, the student will be denied readmission to the College of Business for one year following which a written petition for readmission must be presented at least 30 days prior to the start of the quarter in which readmission is desired. The decision to readmit will be based on meeting current admission standards, analysis of the entire academic record, as well as any other sources of information deemed appropriate. Readmission is not guaranteed.Service to Other Majors Students majoring in programs outside CB who are required to take courses in this college for either their major or minor will be eligible to enroll on a space-available basis. These students will be given priority over other non-college majors wishing to enroll in courses. All students must have taken prerequisites for courses prior to enrollment.
Repeat Policy Business administration and Personal Financial Planning courses may be repeated only once.

In 2016 CWU College of Business proposed a new specialization, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a specialization in Personal Financial Planning (BSBA/PFP). That proposal was approved by CWU Faculty Senate in Spring 2016 and the CWU Board of Trustees in Summer 2016. The program was established in response to direct inquiries from CWU alumni and a review of the professional landscape in financial services. The PFP specialization adheres to learning outcomes recommended by the Certified Financial Planning Board, (CFP Board). In a manner similar to certification in professional accounting, students who successfully complete the CWU program will be prepared to sit for the CFP Board Certification exam. CFP Certification is a highly desired professional designation for prospective employees at companies and organizations involved in different areas of the financial services industry including wealth management, banking, insurance, brokerage, accounting and others.
Continued review of the program content indicated an opportunity to further enhance student preparation with additional relevant courses in counciling and technology, however the BSBA PFP is unable to add such courses in the program given credit caps. At the same time it apparent that some prospective students would prefer to take course more focused on financial planning concepts and skills rather than core BSBA courses that may not be as relevant to their career aspirations. The BS Personal Financial Planning BSPFP provides both a way to extend specific program requirements as well as provide a curriculum accessible to those who may not otherwise have considered a specialization that builds from a core set of courses assigned to all students pursuing a BSBA wilth specialization. Additional information related to program resources and enrollment estimates and outcomes is attached.
