  • Program vs. Shared Core

A shared core is an identical series of courses or blocks of text that can be used by multiple programs. A program is a set of courses or requirements unique to a single program. If you are unsure whether your proposal is a program or a shared core contact curriculog@cwu.edu for assistance.

Department and College Narratives are built as shared cores.

Programs may utilize shared cores as part of their curriculum, however any shared cores listed in the curriculum section will be locked for editing and can only be amended via a unique shared core Program Change Proposal.

  • Program vs. Shared Core*

  • Program Narrative*

The Aviation curriculum is designed to provide a solid foundation in the liberal arts as well as a thorough education and training in a technical discipline. The Professional Pilot major prepares graduates for entry level careers as a pilot in the airline and corporate aviation sectors. The degree is approved by the FAA to certify graduates for an ATP certificate with reduced aeronautical experience (R-ATP).

Students complete a core which provides the aeronautical knowledge and practical experience necessary to earn am FAA Commercial Pilot certificate. After completing the core, the students will have the option of earning their Multiengine or CFI rating (or both) and choose AVP and AVM elective courses which will best fit their career goals. Students admitted with an FAA Private Pilot certificate must pass a Program Transition course prior to beginning flight training. Anyone with an Instrument rating or Commercial pilot certificate not earned at CWU is ineligible for this degree.

    Program Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

    • Apply the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to fly commercial transport aircraft in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Interpret, calculate, and analyze meteorological, aerodynamic, performance, and loading factors to conduct safe and efficient commercial flights.
    • Describe the physiological and psychological limitations to flight crew performance and effectively cope with these limitations in the flight environment.
    • Demonstrate a working knowledge of various aviation industry sectors to include airspace system management, airline operations, and aviation support facilities.
    • Exhibit the verbal and written communication skills needed to interact with operations professionals, staff, and management in aviation organizations and firms.
  • Admission Requirements

Students must be admitted to CWU and then complete a separate application for the Professional Pilot degree.

  • Graduation Requirements
  • Program Requirements

To continue in flight training a student must earn a minimum grade of B- in select ground courses (AVP 141, AVP 142, AVP 241, AVP 242, AVP 354), and a minimum grade of B in select flight courses (AVP 101, AVP 102, AVP 103, AVP 201, AVP 202, AVP 203, AVP 304, AVP 305, AVP 306).

  • Program Curriculum

In this field you will build all of the course requirements for the program. Existing courses can be imported into this program by selecting the "Import Course" from the "View Curriculum Courses" view below (this is the default view). If this program will use an existing shared core, that core can be imported from the Online Catalog by clicking "View Curriculum Schema" icon below, and then clicking "Import Core". Please Note: If you import a core you do not need to import the courses within that shared core. Prior to launch, non-shared cores can be imported as well, but this is a more involved process. It is suggested that users attempting this for the first time contact curriculog@cwu.edu for assistance.

Once all desired courses have been added to the course list, they must also be assigned to a core in the schema.

More detailed instructions on how to complete this section are available here.

  • Program Curriculum *
  • Online Program Options

In the field below please indicate whether the program being proposed will have an online only option available for students.

Please note: Choosing that the program does not have an online only option does not preclude individual students from completing the program using exclusively online courses. Designating an "online only" option requires the department to maintain a pathway for timely completion of the program that is entirely online.

  • Designated online availability for this program:*
  • If "The program does not have a designated online only option." was selected above, please choose the most applicable option below.
Required Summary Information
  • Justification for the Program

This is the field where you will provide a justification for the creation of this program.  If this section is not complete, the proposal will be returned to the originator.

In the box below please address:

    • How will this new program enhance the curriculum of your department, college, and the university?
    • What specific needs are being addressed that are not being met in other programs?
    • Document the demand for this program.
  • Justification*

The current Aviation Flight program needs to be updated to reflect what students who graduate need in today's airline and commercial aviation industries. The specializations were removed and combined into a single degree. Under the current program most AVP students would start out in the First Officer option and then switch to the Commerical Pilot option their senior year. By doing so the students would not get the multiengine or flight instruction experience required by employers. The new AVP major gives students the option to earn their FAA multiengine commerical pilot rating (which is required by the airlines and most commerical flight companies), or their Certified Flight Instructor rating (which is required by our airline pathways programs but not corporate flight departments, and not every student can or should be a flight instructor), or both.

The reduction of required credits from 120-90 will give student more options to tailor their B.S. degree to the specific needs and career aspirations.

The demand for the Avaition: Professional Pilot degree will still be one of the most popular degrees at CWU. Enrollment will not decrease. Students will be given the flexiblity to take charge of the begining of the professional pilot career path with more solid foundation.
