  • Program vs. Shared Core

A shared core is an identical series of courses that are used by multiple programs, while a program is a set of courses or requirements unique to a single program. If you are unsure whether your proposal is a program or a shared core contact curriculog@cwu.edu for assistance. The import feature is unavailable until this selection has been made.

  • Type of Change (check all that apply) *
  • Description of and Justification for Change(s)

For each of the items selected above, detail what in that section is being changed, and the reason that the change is being made.

  • Description and Reason for Change *

Summary of Changes: We are replacing the MATH 360-361 Fall/Winter sequence with a MATH 360-406 Fall/Winter sequence in order to add MATH 406 into the curriculum for the Mathematics: Secondary Education, BA program. In consultation with mathematics faculty, some of the key content from MATH 361 will need to be added into MATH 360. Thus MATH 360 will increase from 3 credits to 4 credits.

Course Addition: MATH 406 (4 credits)

Course Deletion: MATH 361 (3 credits)

Credit Change: MATH 360 (3 credits to 4 credits)

Reason for Changes: In line with recommendations from leading organizations concerning the preparation of secondary mathematics teachers (AMTE, 2017; CBMS, 2010; MAA, 2015; NCTM, 2020), there is a need for the Mathematics: Secondary Education, BA program to included "coursework that focuses on the mathematics [future secondary teachers] are teaching and how it fits into the broader landscape of mathematics" (https://www.cbmsweb.org/archive/MET2/met2.pdf). With respect to algebra, this means understanding grades 5-12 algebra coursework within the broader landscape of algebraic structures. In the current program, secondary mathematics majors take a two-course algebraic structures sequence (MATH 360-361) that provides this "broader landscape" but does not connect to the grades 5-12 algebra content in the practical ways necessary to support secondary mathematics majors in their field experience courses and student teaching.

In consultation with the mathematics department faculty, this balance is best achieved by condensing the current two-course MATH 360-361 algebraic structures sequence into one (higher-credit) MATH 360 course and replacing the second MATH 361 course with MATH 406. So, MATH 360-361 (3 credits, 3 credits) becomes MATH 360-406 (4 credits, 4 credits)

  • Credit Limit

The following question applies only to BA and BS programs, for all other program types, leave this field blank.

For applicable programs, indicate whether the proposal will change the credit total, so that it will exceed the credit limit for that degree type (75 credits for BA programs; 110 for BS programs). If the program was previously approved to exceed this limit, only select "Yes" if the changes will further exceed this limit.

Please note- This question must be answered before the proposal is launched, but the response should be based on the proposed credit total.

  • Will proposed changes to this program exceed the credit limit?
B.A.'s cannot go over 75 credits and B.S.'s cannot go over 110 credits with out approval by the Faculty Senate.
  • Program Text for Catalog Copy

When importing, all program text not built into the curriculum schema will appear in the Program Narrative field. Unless changes are being made, there is no need to parse the text into the other fields. If changes are being made, be sure to remove the old text to avoid potential confusion with conflicting or redundant information.

The Program Narrative is a required description of the program, the others are optional text fields where additional descriptions can be added. If any of the requirements below reference courses or shared cores they must be added into the proposed curriculum (below). For assistance in attaching an existing core, or in creating a new one, contact curriculog@cwu.edu

  • Program Narrative *

This major may be taken as a stand-alone program (without a teacher certification program). However, this major, when combined with the STEM Teaching or Secondary Education programs, is the most efficient pathway for students seeking teaching endorsement in secondary mathematics.

Admission Requirements for BS Mathematics Majors, Mathematics Minor and and BA Mathematics: Secondary Education
Admission to any of the above majors in the mathematics department will be considered after the first two quarters of calculus are taken (MATH 172 and MATH 173). Students with credit for MATH 173 should contact the Mathematics Department to meet with a faculty advisor. Application forms are available from the mathematics department office. Students must meet with a mathematics faculty advisor before being considered for the mathematics majors or minor. Students must earn a minimum grade of C in any course that fulfills a major or minor requirement.

Additional Requirements for Mathematics: Secondary Education
The Mathematics: Secondary Education BA, Mathematics (Small Plan) BS, or Applied Mathematics BS Majors partially satisfy the criteria for teaching endorsement in Mathematics (5-12), qualifying students to teach mathematics at the high school, middle, or junior high levels. Students who successfully complete one of these three majors with the listed elective restrictions and the STEM Teaching Program (an alternative to the Professional Education Program) are eligible to apply for Washington State teacher certification. Teacher certification candidates must receive a C grade or higher in all major and STEM Teaching Program courses, have a GPA of at least 3.0 for either the last 45 graded quarter credits or overall CWU/transfer cumulative, and meet all Washington State teacher certification requirements.  See the secondary mathematics teaching advisor as soon as possible to develop a course of study.

    Graduation Requirements
Students must earn an C or higher in each course in the major.

    Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
